State of Pakistan - Feb 6 @ 6pm - Research Building 1 Room 163

2 02 2008

Over the past couple of years, Pakistan has become a center for global attention, but sadly, most Americans and people around the world are not fully aware of the current state of Pakistan.

Pakistan is often portrayed and viewed as a terrorist state that is nurturing terrorists around the world. People out on the streets burning effigies of President Bush, the madrassas instilling anti-US sentiment into the youth and the women being tortured into covering their heads and treated as mindless and useless beings. This is the image that is portrayed of our country in present day.

We, as Pakistanis, need to portray the true image of our country to the world and prove that there is more to Pakistan than what the media currently shows. Our ancestors have struggled and risked their lives and many have given their lives to create this nation for us. However, their dream has not been fulfilled because of what the current state of Pakistan is. In order to end the struggle and misery of the people in Pakistan and to give them stability and safety, we as fellow citizens need to take initiative and find a way to help better their lives.

This is our duty as fellow human beings who believe people have the right to happiness and the basic necessities of life and for their voice to be heard.

Speakers:

Don Belt | Senior International Correspondent for National Geographic

Shuja Nawaz
| Expert on Pakistani Policy

Marvin Weinbaum
| Scholar at Middle East Institute

Bhutto’s Assassination

29 12 2007

The Pakistan Students Association at George Mason University offers its condolences and prayers to the Bhutto family, and to the families of other individuals killed in yesterday’s horrific event.

Pakistanis should truly mourn yesterday’s events, regardless of Bhutto’s political agenda or background, as she was a fellow Pakistani and a once Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

This assassination should be seen as a wake up call for all Pakistanis who don’t acknowledge the fragile state Pakistan is currently in. The country is on the verge of crumbling based not on religious differences, but rather on political ones, regarding who supports whom in the upcoming elections, and weather one supports the west or not.

This the time when all Pakistanis should unite and struggle for a better Pakistan, regardless of their political, social, religious or ethnic background!

Project Sehar Update

1 12 2007

projectseharlogo2.jpg
Salaam everyone, We apologize for the delay, but we would like to share with you the details about Project Sehar: Sunrise of Hope. This program was a relief effort organized to spread the joy of Eid-ul-Fitr to the unfortunate flood victims displaced in refugee camps in Pakistan. During the month of Ramadan we collected donations at kiosks at GMU, iftars, and local businesses. We raised over $6000 in donations, which was handed over to our treasurer, Jahanzeb Burney’s family. They directly handled the responsibility of the distribution of basic necessities to the victims. The items purchased and distributed included cooking oil, rice milk, daal or lentils, noodles, flour and sugar. Through your contributions, 1500 refugees located in four different camps outside of Karachi enjoyed a bounty of food on the day of Eid. In addition, we were able to gift 1000 children aged from 1-16 with a brand new suit of clothing. We would like to thank each and everyone of you that supported Project Sehar: Sunrise of Hope. A special thank you goes out to Jahanzeb Burney and his family who volunteered to lead the distribution in Pakistan. We are extremely grateful for all of the charitable contributions we received. Through your overwhelming support, together we provided aid to those who were in dire need after the catastrophic flooding in Pakistan. We have uploaded digital photos from the relief effort to our website, under the ‘Pictures’ tab. You can click here to go straight to the Project Sehar Album.

We appreciate your help and support! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us!
